Wanted / free items listed here soon
Very soon wanted/free items will be listed on the right column of the front page. It costs nothing to list a wanted item (I'm looking for a new Subaru) or something that you're giving away for free. Items marked "For Sale" cannot be listed yet, but this option will be available soon for a small fee.

Contact form errors : FIXED
We're experiencing some errors with the events contact forms. The 'captcha' does not seem to work. It asks you to enter the numbers, but then says you have entered them incorrectly. A bit frustrating. But I am working on fixing the problem.

Voted most popular for 2010
The Christmas lights voted most popular for 2010 was the dazzling display on Reynolds Road. Congratulations!!

It was unfortunately a bit of a wash-out this year (oops!) LAST year and it was hard to get around to see all the lights on display. And there wasn't much point when the rain most nights made it difficult and sometimes dangerous to drive around. But what we did see was fantastic and hopefully Cassowary Coasters will make the same effort when the silly season comes around again at the end of the year.

Thank you to everyone who voted. The winner of the solar fairy lights will be announced soon.

Christmas lights people's choice
Tis the season to be silly... fa la la la la... etc etc!!

One of the GREAT things about this time of the year are the LIGHTS and DECORATIONS that people string/hoist/stand/hang up and around their homes. The effort that goes into putting up such magnificent displays must be enormous, and it's great to see the thought that goes into the design of many of these amazing Christmas lights displays.

To reward their effort, and I suppose to say thank you for brightening up our region this time of year, there is a competition run by the CCR council. The prizes are getting bigger and bigger every year but it seems that the final decision of who wins still remains with a select panel of judges.

That's why Cassowary Connect runs it's own PEOPLE'S CHOICE competition!!

Cassowary Connect (also known as BIG CHOOK) has run a public vote to decide the most popular Christmas lights display for the last three years now. Photos of this year's lights are being taken and some are up on the site already. The competition page with voting facilities will be up soon!

If you want to take part just contact
cassowaryconnect.com for more info.

What the... ?!!
This dodgey sign was spotted at the weekend while driving through town. I couldn't believe it and had to ask my boyfriend to stop the car, turn around and go back. On the corner of Aerodrome Rd and Innisfail/Japoon Rd, this sign doesn't point to a garage sale, it points to someone in dire need of a dictionary!!

The Big Chook
Although Cassowary Connect has been alive and kicking for over two years many people still have trouble with the NAME.
"What's the name of your cassowary website?" a friend asked recently. Some confuse it with CassowaryCoastNews.com and others I know refer to it as the Cassowary Coast Connect website.

All in all, Cassowary Connect is a mouthful of a name.

So I am thinking of renaming the website.
What do you think about BIG CHOOK?

Much shorter, simpler, and possibly easier to remember. The Big Chook website will be found at
www.bigchook.com and will look pretty much the same as its predecessor Cassowary Connect, except it will have a mascot (a big chook of course - looks a bit familiar she does...) and might have a paid ad spot highlighting big productions/events.

Any feedback is welcome.

PS - most current feedback is that the Big Chook doesn't have big wings! Madame will be adjusted soon to reflect her anatomical proportions more accurately.

Expo to attract Local jobs for Locals
Skilling Tully and the Tully Rotary Club are combining to bring a skills expo to the Tully Showgrounds on Wednesday, August 26.
The Tully Rotary Skills Expo will take place in the Stan Mackay Pavilion from 11am to 5pm, and is a free event for stallholders and visitors to the expo.
Co-ordinator Sarah Smallman said the expo is part of Skilling Tully's efforts to boost apprenticeships and traineeships in the Tully Region.
"Skilling Tully is part of the Queensland Government's Blueprint for the Bush, a 10-year plan to build a sustainable, liveable and prosperous rural Queensland," Ms Smallman said.
"The Tully Rotary Skills Expo is the first of its kind in Tully.
"The expo will link the region's employers with school students and mature-aged citizens, who are seeking apprenticeships or traineeships.
"The expo will include information about how to gain employment as an apprentice or trainee, as well as 'interactive' stalls showcasing the work undertaken by local businesses.
"Regional areas in particular are experiencing skill shortages and apprenticeship and traineeships are one part of the solution.
"The expo will promote the benefits of apprenticeships or traineeships to local school students and mature-aged members of the community."
Exhibitors at the Tully Rotary Skills Expo include education and apprenticeship service providers, industry and government bodies and employers such as Tully Sugar, Island Coast Holden, Hunts Outboards and Mower Services, People on a Mission and Harle's Electrical.

Art Space Awards Night [Update]
Wow! The Art Space awards night was fantastic! We had a great turn out and hopefully everyone had a good time.

A whole heap of certificates and prizes were given out with the grand prize of a $50 voucher drawn right at the end - the lucky recipient was Shinji, a very talented young artist. I'm sure he'll make good use of the voucher. Thank you Brandors!

Not too many photos to show though as I was far too busy having a good time to stop and get the camera out, but Lea from the Advocate was there - so look out for the next edition of the paper!

Thank you to all our young ARTISTS! Without you there would have been no exhibition.
Thank you to parents for supporting and encouraging your children.
Thank you to Brandor Business Services and Stationery Supplies who provided the prizes for the winners. They sell a great range of art materials all reasonably priced (no, really, they DO!)
Thank you to South Johnstone State School for printing the certificates.
Thank you to Innisfail Art Society for providing the gallery space.
Thank you to Cassowary Connect for the online gallery & voting system.
And also, thank you to everyone who voted. We had over 80 people vote and I'm glad they did because I wouldn't want such a difficult decision left up to just one person.

Here is the result of those votes: the MOSTies...

[Update]
EXCITING NEWS! Art Space entries that were in the Central Gallery will be displayed at OFF THE RAILS for 4 to 6 weeks from the 10th of August. If you have taken your picture home I will be contacting you during the holidays; if you did not take your painting home it is safe and sound at South Johnstone State Preschool, where it can stay until it goes to OFF THE RAILS in August. Paintings hung at OFF THE RAILS can be marked "For Sale" if you want.

Question: Should votes be public?
The Art Space competition is under way. The public can vote for their favourite (follow Art Space links from the home page or click here ->
cassowaryconnect.com

It's been interesting to watch behind the scenes the most popular paintings slowly rise up in their different categories. Over 70 votes have been registered, and I'm wondering whether to make the number of votes (that each painting has received) public before the end of the competition... or leave it all under wraps until the awards night?

I can think of reasons for and against but am wondering what others think.

Online Vs Print
Answered a call this morning from someone "ringing up about the ute in the paper". I don't have a ute - they didn't have the right number. Now if the wrong number has been printed in the paper (it wouldn't be the first time) I'll be getting calls about my non-existent ute all week.

It got me thinking of the differences between printed and online publications. A wrong number published online can be corrected in an instant - right now, today. An incorrect number, or any error, printed in a newspaper is there for good, even if corrections are published the next week.

But the permanency of a newspaper has its advantages. Announcing births, graduations, or weddings through the internet is quick and the news is easily spread worldwide, but I imagine a newspaper clipping of the event would hold more sentimental value twenty years down the road.

Plus, there are still many people around who do not have a computer or internet access (or TV!) and rely on radio and local/national rags for news and information, like where to buy a second-hand ute (not here!).

Newspapers Vs Computers:
- You can't mulch your garden, line the bird cage, or make a pinata with a computer
- You can't swat a fly with a computer
- You can't make an impromptu floor mat or umbrella with a computer
- You can't use a computer for emergency bog roll

But...

- You can't publish a news story NOW with a newspaper. It has to be in before [enter time here] on [enter day here] to make the next edition.

Young talent on show [Update]
The trickle of entries into the Art Space Exhibition & Competition turned into a FLOOD! In the end we received over thirty entries. It has been thrilling to see the artistic talent on display.

The exhibition is now officially open, and everyone is invited to come along and see it for themselves.

[UPDATE]
There is an online display accompanying the exhibition where you can vote for your favourite (follow Art Space links or click here ->
cassowaryconnect.com ). There have been over 70 votes so far in the past few days. It's good that people are checking out the online exhibition but it is no substitute for seeing the fabulous artworks up close.

I think the artwork is a good representation of the physical aspects of the Cassowary
Coast region. The text that accompanies each painting was taken from each artist's entry form -

For example:

- At The Creek (45x45cm) by Ruby Bishop (age 6)
Her painting is about going to the creek where she likes to swim.
- Mission Beach From A Parachute (40x40cm) by Shinji Hain (age 9)
His painting is about a parachute jump he did with his dad.
- Green Turtle (30x30cm) by Angie Rutter (age 12)
Her painting is about a green turtle in the ocean at Green Island.
- King Forest (50x40cm) by Cahil Abrahams (age 9)
His painting is about the rain forest.

Some emotive subjects are portrayed as well:

- Love (30x30cm) by Mariah Lawrence (age 10)
Her painting is about how crazy love is.
- I Wish (45x45cm) by Matilda Bishop (age 10)
Her painting is about a little budgie that lives in a cage and dreams he could fly into
the real world.
- Midnight (30x30cm) by Joe Rutter (age 8)
His painting is about scary nightime colours.
- Hand Print (30x30cm) by Bianca Tulk (age 10)
Her painting is about Emo Kids.

Part of the exhibition also includes advertisements for local art groups, and a low table with pencils, textas, crayons and A4 paper. Children viewing the exhibit are invited to draw something in response and this is displayed on the gallery window and becomes a part of the show.

Opening times will vary as the exhibit will be staffed by volunteers. A sign will be posted at the gallery with the open times.

Hope to see you there!

Telstra to the rescue?
I read on ABC.net.au about a man, working on a farm in Kenya, who got tangled up with a huge python. The snake coiled around him and dragged him up a tree and then when it relaxed its grip... "Mr Nyaumbe said he was able to take a mobile phone out of his pocket and phone for help"...

Now if that was in Australia, and the phone was a Telstra mobile, we would never have heard of Mr Nyaumbe's plight. The poor Kenyan man would have taken his mobile phone out of his pocket and cried in despair at the absence of bars on the screen.

Happy Birthday Cassowary Connect!
Cassowary Connect is ONE YEAR OLD on the 28th of March! Our online events guide has changed a bit since it was launched last year initially listing "Jobs, Events & Classies". Due to lack of demand, the Jobs and Classifieds pages of Cassowary Connect were temporarily removed but they may return if there is a demand for them in the future.

Cassowary Connect now lists many regular/weekly events as well as one-off events. It is FREE to list your event. You can do it yourself with the easy online form or send the details to us and we will list it for you. Once listed, your event is categorised and sent out to interested people in a weekly mailout every Thursday, and it is included on Google.

Cassowary Connect is constantly being improved and the most recent improvement is the addition of our RSS FEED. With our RSS feed you can have events that are listed on Cassowary Connect automatically appear on your own website or blog. We are also trying out
twitter.com which looks like a great way to keep up to date with events via your mobile phone.

Eeny meeny miney mo...
Who to choose? Hum ho... It's only the second time I've voted as a new citizen in Australia. The first time was a biggie and I knew exactly where I was going to make my mark. Easy decision.

This time around I haven't got a clue which way to go. I don't know who half of the candidates are, and the other half don't inspire me much. My phone-a-friend suggested a "protest vote"... vote for the little guy to send a message to the big guys.

Maybe I should just spin around three times, shut my eyes, and hope for the best?

Wear YELLOW on Friday
Wear yellow on Friday and show your support for the local banana industry.

"The agency [Biosecurity] on Tuesday announced a quarantine policy had been determined for the importing of bananas from the Philippines.

The policy will be used to assess import applications for bananas from the Philippines.

"These measures are designed to limit quarantine risk to a level that is acceptably low in order to achieve Australia's appropriate level of protection," Biosecurity Australia said in a statement."
[ from
www.freshplaza.com ]

LIMIT quarantine risk?

There is a risk. And as everyone is pointing out, the risk is not just to the local banana.

"There are fears the decision could pose a significant threat to the region's $350 million banana industry and undermine more than 6000 jobs"

Everyone in the Far North will feel the effect if imported bananas infect local nanas with a couple of foreign bugs. And there's a few...

"The main diseases and pests of quarantine concern are Moko, black Sigatoka, Freckle, Mealybugs, Armoured scales, Spider mites and Thrips."

Everyone in the Far North will feel the effect. And today I realised, while driving to work, that that includes me. With all the talk of recession I've been feeling quite comfortable in my job as a teacher at a school run by the state government. But... if people can't find work, I think a few might up sticks and go to where work is. Up sticks, up school-going kids, and leave town.

And when kids start leaving rural schools, the small schools get even smaller and fewer teachers are required.

So help us all keep our jobs and wear yellow on Friday!

10,000 hits in 10 Months?
I've been meaning to write this for a long time. I am an educator after all, and I am hoping that this rant will educate a few.

"10,000 hits in 10 Months" sounds great, but what does it really mean? What are hits?

"Hit counters record one hit for every time a webpage is viewed... problematic because it does not distinguish unique visitors."
www.opentracker.net

"Don't ever take Hits as an accurate indication of traffic to a website..."
www.go4.com.au

Try this test on a website that proudly displays a counter: click refresh/reload five times (or press ctrl+R) and if the counter goes up by five then the site is counting hits, not visits.

So when you see a website with a counter showing 10,000 hits it does not mean 10,000 people have visited that site.

A better way to gage the amount of people visiting your site is to use a more sophisticated tool than a simple hit counter. The most thorough and accurate one that I know is Google Analytics. And it's free.

(PS, if you want hits... we've had 282,000 in about 12 months according to cassowaryconnect.com sounds impressive doesn't it?!)

January was a great month for freebies!
Many small clubs and businesses held open days last month. It was a great chance to try out the various activities they had to offer without opening the wallet.
For example...

- Free "Try Days" from Baseline Tennis (
cassowaryconnect.com ).

- Free demonstration class for families with children under 5 from kinderMusik ( cassowaryconnect.com ).

- Free "Come & Try Day" with the Coconuts Outriggers ( cassowaryconnect.com ).

- Free art activities from Art Space ( cassowaryconnect.com ).

Plus on the 26th of January there were numerous free events put on to celebrate Australia Day ( cassowaryconnect.com ).

But the generosity didn't stop at the end of the month, it continued into February with a free bellydance workshop put on by GypsyRain ( cassowaryconnect.com ), and there were free bottles of CHI3 on offer ( cassowaryconnect.com ), a new energy drink first brought to our attention by Hazel Holland. Now we know where she gets her energy from!

282 Palmerston Highway
This house has absolutely everything from a singing Santa, train set, singing toys, bubble machine, a Santa on a motor bike and heaps of home made wooden cutouts, blow ups, and not to forget thousands of lights.
You need to walk into this house to be able to appreciate everything as it is full of so many surprises.
They are also raising money for the Cerebral Palsy League of Queensland as the Granddaughter has CP.
